Mobile Hotspot Lending

The Internet to go!

Borrow a Mobile Hotspot from Portage County District Library (PCDL). Our Mobile Hotspot works in any area covered by the Verizon network, and can be used anywhere to create a wireless network. A Mobile Hotspot is easy-to-use and it'll keep your tablet, laptop, and other Wi-Fi-enabled devices connected to the Internet. You can connect up to 15 Wi-Fi-enabled mobile devices.

WHAT DO I NEED TO KNOW?

How do I check out a Mobile Hotspot?

Visit your PCDL branch library and look for the teal blue display cards. Pick up a display card and turn it in at the Circulation Desk. After you sign the user agreement, library staff will pull the device for checkout.

Who can check out a Mobile Hotspot?

A Mobile Hotspot may be borrowed by PCDL cardholders ages 18 and older whose accounts are in good standing. Don't have a PCDL card?

How long can I keep a Mobile Hotspot?

You can borrow a Mobile Hotspot for 2 weeks.

Can I place a hold on a Mobile Hotspot?

A hold can be placed on a Mobile Hotspot by eligible PCDL cardholders just like other library materials. When you place a hold, you will be placed on a waiting list to receive the next available Mobile Hotspot.

Can I use the Mobile Hotspot outside the U.S.?

No, the Mobile Hotspot only works in the U.S.

Can I use the Mobile Hotspot to send/receive text messages?

No. Texting/SMS messaging is not available.

How do I return the Mobile Hotspot?

You must return the Mobile Hotspot to a PCDL branch library. You must return the device with all the original packaging and accessories. Patrons are asked to fully charge the battery before returning the device.

Can I renew the Mobile Hotspot?

No. A Mobile Hotspot cannot be renewed. Please note: Mobile Hotspot will be turned off once it's 1 day overdue.

How much does it cost to borrow a Mobile Hotspot?

Borrowing and using a Mobile Hotspot is free. If the device or any parts are missing when it is returned, a fee will be charged to your library account. Overdue fines are $1.00 per day. Full replacement cost is $50.00.

What information about my Internet usage, if any, is tracked by Portage County District Library?

Your Internet usage is not tracked by PCDL. PCDL does not have access to or collect usage data, and does not provide patron information to the service provider. The only data about the Mobile Hotspot lending program that PCDL collects is:

  • The total amount of data transmitted and received by each device during a billing cycle.
  • Anonymous circulation data related to checkouts of the Mobile Hotspot devices.

The mobile hotspot has prompted me to update the software. Should I do that?

Yes. The mobile hotspot periodically receives software updates from the service provider. You can go ahead and accept the update. The software upgrade process only takes a few minutes.
