Brief description:
Here is a chance to be a reader, reviewer, and critic while earning community service credit/volunteer hours.

How-to for this program:

All suggested books come from the ALA website under YALSA 2020 Best Books for Young Adults and 2020 Excellence in Nonfiction for Young Adults. Any YA book can be reviewed, though. Reviews are kept in a binder in the Teen Area so that they can serve as a book selection guide for readers of YA literature. Reviews will also be posted online on our library website. This ensures that the program can be fully socially distant. Reviewers will receive three hours of community service credit/volunteer hours for each submitted review that meets all of the requirements listed on the instruction page, up to a total of 9 hours per quarter. Certificates acknowledging any credits earned will be given to or sent as a PDF document via email.

Here is the description of the program as it looks on our website:

The library is looking for people ages 13+ willing to read and review award-winning books for Young Adults selected by the American Library Association. Here is a chance to be a reader, reviewer, and critic while earning community service credit/volunteer hours. If you are interested in becoming a YA Book Reviewer, please print the documents and/or contact the library for further correspondence.

This requires collaboration between the Volunteer Services, the Social Media/Web, and the Teen Services Departments. Flyers have been made and we are pitching this to the school system as a way for students to receive credit for volunteer hours. Patrons will be able to print the application and guidelines from the website and correspond via email if they so choose. Proof that they've done the necessary work to receive the volunteer/community service credit will be in the quality of the reviews. They will have to be approved, and all of the requirements are in the guidelines.
