Remember what a novelty Pokemon Go was in 2016? It introduced the world to augmented reality as a working concept. AR (augmented reality) is the overlaying of digital imagery on top of a view of the real world, most often using one’s cell phone. AR has come a long way since the early days of catching Pikachu, and it’s expanding in some major ways. After all, even dogs can use AR now.

  • How to View Augmented Reality Experiences Hiding on Your Amazon Boxes [Lifehacker] “Amazon is changing its packaging to use less material, but it’s also adding quirky QR codes to its new boxes that let you scan and play with 3D models on your phone using Amazon’s AR Player app. “
  • Surgeons Use Augmented Reality In The Operating Room [NBC News] “This technology actually allows us to see the bony anatomy in real-time, in a 3-D model that we can see while we are placing the screws, improving our ability to safely place the screws in the patient’s bones.”
  • Forget AR glasses. Augmented reality is headed to your windshield [Digital Trends] “A portable AR headset has to pack in a whole lot of advanced technology to a relatively compact form factor. That likely means underpowered (and underwhelming) AR experiences. A car, on the other hand, has plenty of room to fit the various sensor suites and processors needed.”
  • Augmented Reality R&D Surges During Remote Learning [Market Scale] “The initial launch of RALE will focus on first year Chemistry, Biology and Physics students from the Faculty of Science at Ryerson and enable over 5,000 students to participate in rich, collaborative AR enhanced learning experiences during the Fall and Winter Terms.”
